L-glutamine is a dominant amino acid in the spinal fluid and serum. Glutamine, but not glutamic acid, can easily pass through the blood-brain barrier. Glutamine is a unique brain fuel. It protects the body from the effects of alcohol and inhibits the craving for alcohol and, in some cases, sugar. Glutamine is beneficial to recovery from stomach ulcers and can be used to alleviate depression.
Glutamine is easily converted to glutamic acid:
- Glutamic acid is converted into GABA, a cerebral sedative and possibly a neurotransmitter.
- Glutamic acid is a component of folic acid and of the glucose tolerance factor. It is also a component of the tripeptide glutathione.
- It appears to be effective in the treatment of behaviour problems in children.
- Glutamic acid detoxifies ammonia in the brain by conversion into glutamine.
Recent scientific research suggests that the body needs more glutamine in periods of stress than it can produce. If this is true, glutamine could be considered a ‘conditionally essential’ amino acid.
